Staying Safe During A Flood

Did you know that nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas? Did you also know that Fema.gov reports in the last five years, that all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods? Even if you have never experienced a flood before, that doesn’t mean you never will. Of the most common and widespread natural disasters, floods are right there near the top. Even small floods can cause substantial damage and can become dangerous quickly. It is important in the event of a flood to remember safety first. Below are tips from the American Red Cross:
- Keep away from floodwaters. Remember that just six inches of quickly moving water is enough to possibly sweep you off your feet. If you come to running water that is over your ankles, carefully turn around and find another way.
- Rapid currents can also sweep away large, heavy items like cars. Many vehicles can be swept away with less than two feet of water! Travel should be avoided if possible but if you are out on the road and it appears to be flooded, turn around and go a different way. If you get caught on a flooded road and the waters are rising quickly around you, leave the car for higher ground and ideally, dry, safe shelter.
- Keep children away from the water. Kids tend to be curious and may not understand the risks of contaminated water or running water.
